So a few days ago, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , was lamenting the amount of work that his moto needed... And I offered that the amount of work his bike needed wasn’t really a big deal.. Included in the needed work was replacing the fork seals.. which I casually dismissed as part of the equation of owning motorbikes. Well, dammit, I forgot to knock on wood...

After almost two weeks of ridiculously warm temps here in Colorado, in which I’ve had the moto out and about.. well, pulled a giant wheelie this weekend and I guess it was the straw that broke the camel’s seals... Both of my fork seals are leaking now.... One’s just oozing a sheen of oil.. the other’s completely blown and puking oil....

But checked my notes, I got 5000 kms out of one seal and about 4300 km on the other.... Not bad for a GS bike.. But if I’d knocked on wood I feel I could of gotten a fair amount more.....

Nice looking bike. We had a warm weekend in stl and I had mine out at well. Good luck with the seal repair, it’s not difficult, just a pain in the ass.

Yeah.. crazy warm weather all over the rockies... And yeah, I’ve replaced seals quite a few times at this point.. not difficult, but yeah, kind of a dirty, oily pain in the ass.... What kind of bike ya got?

My main one is a 71 honda CB500, but I'm in the middle of getting back on the road a 79 goldwing and a 80 cm400a. I kind of collect old Hondas (have 4 others in a shed out back).

I just noticed yours has upside down forks. So I imagine you leave them bolted into the triple tree and just remove the wheel and fork tubes? I’m used to regular orientation forks which requires the entire front end be torn apart usually to get them replaced. I did it on my cb500 last spring, and will probably do it again this year. Not because it needs it again, but I’ll likely be taking it apart to rebuild/upgrade my brakes so I might as well at that point.

Cool on the old hondas.... my first bike was an old honda enduro... such a great bike....just the shadow of my finger on the start button and that thing would leap to life.

But even with the UD forks, I still remove each leg from the triple tree... But luckily the bolts aren’t hidden by the body work, so I don’t really have to tear apart anything.. just pull off the wheel, loosen the clamp bolts and pull each fork leg off... but I just dread the “ no matter how many times you pump the fork, there’s still some oil in it, waiting to drool out across the table, when you least expect it ”.

That’s not too bad. My 500 has rubber gators and headlight/turn signal ears on the forks so that has to be all taken apart and put back together in a specific order that seems to need 6 hands.

I’ll usually let my forks sit upright and drain for 20 min after I take them out before I put them on the table.

I just moved to Denver and I ride a KTM 1190 adventure. Maybe you can hook me up with some good places to ride?

First off, welcome to Colorado— and secondly, sick bike! Best places to ride right now (since the snow is returning as we speak) is the desert... *sigh* But once spring/summer arrives, ohhhh... many, many zones! haha

What part of Denver are you in?
